| Ex-Gratia,
Relief and Awards to Forest Staff in 2000
In case of forest staff dying or being injured in the
course of duty, WTI has tried to pay ex-gratia relief
to boost the morale of the other staff and provide compensation
to the bereaved families.
Ex-Gratia has been given by WTI in the following cases:
- Tengari Reserve Forest of Phulbani Forest Division,
Orissa: Forest Guards Sudarsan Altia and N.K Behara
were murdered while trying to stop the illegal felling
of timber. They were axed to death and the bodies
burned.
- Kaziranga National Park, Assam: Narayan Saikia
was gored to death by a Rhino with a calf, when he
accidently stumbled upon them, during a tiger census
in the park.
- Orang National Park, Assam: Samsul Haque,
a notorious poacher turned conservationist worked
with the forest department, was unfortunately killed
by his fellow poachers. His family members were in
dire need of financial assistance. Since he was not
employed by the forest department, he could not be
given any financial assistance by the Government.
- Orang National Park, Assam: Jamal Ali from
Orang National Park, employed by the forest department
as a grass cutter, died while chasing poachers. He
is survived by his ailing wife.
- Kaziranga National Park: Forest Guard Ashok
Bora, who stopped a Nagaland cadre Indian Administrative
Services (IAS) officer from poaching inside the National
Park, was assaulted and injured. He still managed
to arrest the offender. WTI has recommended him for
a cash award.
