Kits for Special Protection Squad of Nagzira Wildlife
Sanctuary
New Delhi, September 5 2000: WTI decided
in consultation with the Maharashtra Forest Department
to distribute 12 anti-poaching kits to the special protection
squad of the Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary on 5th September
2000. Nagzira is one of the small but critical protected
areas for Tigers in Central India. Accordingly, the
Wildlife Trust of India's local partner, Mr.Nitin Desai,
proceeded into the forests on 4th September. A meeting
of the entire staff was arranged on the 5th. Anti-Poaching
kits provided by WTI were also distributed at the same
time. The Deputy Conservator of Forests of Gondia Wildlife
Division presided over the function.
So
far the special squad has done a great job in controlling
illicit felling in Nagzira. In fact, timber worth
Rs.15 lakhs has been seized in just 11 months. The
squad is also keeping a check on poachers. The situation
around Nagzira is at a flash point, as is evident
from the murder of a chowkidar last month. The Deputy
Conservator of Forests expressed his overwhelming
gratitude for this gesture by WTI.
