Excerpts of interview of Don Young
Don Young is a professional naturalist and safari guide from the US who has lived and worked in Kenya for 25 years. He first got in touch with WTI during the Venu Menon Awards in 2004 in Delhi. He is associated with WTI as a Special Projects Advisor. The following are excerpts of an interview:
1. What parallels do you see between conservation in India and Kenya?
Young: There are several direct parallels: human overpopulation and encroachment, degradation of habitat, corruption, conservation policy, lack of adequate financial and livelihood support to communities neighbouring wildlife areas.
2. You intend taking some people to East Africa to see African animals, to promote wildlife conservation in India?
Young: Yes, we're thinking of taking key people from North East India to experience Kenya's wildlife management. It would constitute a first hand experience and inspiration to save animals and habitats in their own areas .
3. Which Indian Protected Areas have you visited?
Young: I have been to Corbett, Ranthambhore, Rajaji, Kaziranga, Manas and Bharatpur. I love Indian culture and spirituality.
4. What are your suggestions on effective conservation measures in India?
Young: There must be community based conservation initiatives in India. Young people are the future, they must recognise the value of forests.
