Namibia, October 29, 2008: The controversial auction of stockpiled ivory from four African nations allowed by the 14th CoP of CITES began yesterday. About 7 tonnes of raw African elephant tusks as well as carved ivory from Namibia were sold to bidders Japan and China.
The ongoing one-off sale of about 108 tonnes of ivory by Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa is the second, since the 1989 international ban on trade in elephant parts.

Wild animals trying to cross the road or carcasses of those killed while attempting it, are a common sight for travelers on a 12.5 km stretch within Bandipur National Park in Karnataka, along the Mysore to Ooty state highway. This highway, about 5.5 metres wide, is one of many metalled roads that dissect and fragment the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve of which Bandipur NP is a part.

Elephant molar teeth seized from the tradersWildlife traders held in Bijnor, UP
Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh), October 14, 2008:
Three wildlife traders were arrested from Chandpur Village in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday, when they unwittingly attempted to sell ivory and elephant molar teeth to a decoy customer. Two molar teeth weighing five kilogrammes each were seized from them in the undercover operation, jointly implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (UPSTF), the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI).

Rio Grande (Brazil), October 6, 2008 – Close to 400 rescued penguins took to the skies on a C-130 Hercules military aircraft bound for Pelotas, in southern Brazil where they were released back to their ocean home. Delhi, September 17, 2008: Four sloth bears including a cub were rescued by authorities in Lahan in the southeastern Sirhaha district in Nepal, last week, acting on the information provided by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). Three of the four bears were adults trained as dancing bears to be sold to Kalandars in India.

Openbill stork800 openbill storks die in Assam as nesting tree collapses
Shilonijan (Assam), September 18, 2008: In a freak accident, more than 800 Asian openbill storks, mostly chicks and juveniles, were killed as the banyan tree on which they were nesting collapsed on Monday night.
Sixty-one birds which survived were brought to IFAW-WTI run Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation on Tuesday from Shilonijan in Karbi Anglong Autonomous District, where the incident happened.

Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu), August 1, 2008: In contrast to the disappointing decline in India’s overall tiger population revealed in the latest census, tiger numbers in Tamil Nadu’s protected areas have shown a promising increase since 2002. An increase in tiger population was also seen in the non-protected areas of the state, including the upper Nilgiri plateau, home to the indigenous Toda community.
